Why I built Copper Lane this way.
Rural businesses around here keep getting quoted £1,500 to £3,000 for a website by city agencies, then handed something slow, broken, and that no one ever updates.
That is not how this should work. A pub in Helmsley, a plumber in Thirsk, a B&B in Pickering, you do not need a five-figure investment to have a proper website. You need someone local who will build something honest, set it up properly, and pick up the phone when you call.
The studio is in Ampleforth, in the Howardian Hills. If you want to come round for a coffee and look me in the eye before you decide, that is fine by me.

How can you actually afford to build websites with no upfront cost?
Two reasons. There is no agency overhead, no studio rent, no account managers, no resellers in the middle. And the model itself: instead of a big bill at the start, the build is included in a simple monthly plan that also covers genuine ongoing services, hosting, business email, security, support, and on the £49 plan, active local SEO. Some clients also later ask me to do their logos, Facebook ads, flyers or business cards, that is where the studio makes the rest of its money.
What's the actual catch?
No setup fee, no build fee, nothing to pay upfront. There is a simple 12-month plan at £29/month because that is the shape that makes the free-build model work, exactly like a phone contract. After 12 months it continues month to month with 30 days notice either way. If you needed to leave early, you would settle the remaining months of the plan.
What does the £29 a month actually cover?
Hosting on a fast UK-based server, your domain, security, daily backups, SSL, business email, support, and monthly edits handled by me. The £49 plan adds active monthly local SEO work, Google Business Profile posts, review replies, citations, rank checks, and a monthly report. Both are 12-month plans, both lock the founding rate for as long as you stay.
What happens after the 12-month plan?
It continues month to month with 30 days notice either way. No price rise, no automatic re-contract. If you ever want to leave, you give 30 days notice and I help you move your domain and content cleanly elsewhere.
Who owns the website?
While your plan is running, your site is built and hosted by Copper Lane, and your domain, content and accounts stay in your name. After the 12-month term it is yours to keep, built on standard tools so any developer can take it on. If you move on I export everything and help you migrate cleanly.
How is this different from those £99-a-month website companies?
Three ways. The price is less than a third of theirs, and your founding rate is locked for as long as you stay. You deal directly with me, the person who built it, not a support queue. And there is no lock-in beyond the 12-month plan: after the term the site is yours to keep, with a clean export if you ever move on. The price is in writing and there are no hidden costs.
How far do you work? I am not in Ampleforth.

How long does a website take to build?
A few days to about a week from a signed brief, once I have your content and photos. Simpler sites faster. The bottleneck is usually you getting me the photos and copy, not the build itself.
