Google Search Console for Small Business Is the Free Tool Nobody Opens
Most owners have a Google Business Profile, an analytics account they never look at, and a Search Console property somebody set up once and then forgot about. Of those three, Google Search Console for small business owners is easily the most useful, and easily the least opened.
It is free, it comes straight from Google, and it answers questions nothing else can answer honestly. What did people type before they landed on you, and has Google actually put your pages in the index.
You do not need to understand the whole tool. Three checks, once a month, ten minutes.
The queries people type are rarely the ones you guessed
Open the Performance report, set it to the last three months, and read the query list.
That is search query data straight from the source, and it is usually humbling. An Easingwold joiner we work with was certain his money term was “bespoke joinery”. His actual traffic came from “fitted wardrobes near me” and “kitchen fitter Easingwold”, two phrases that appeared nowhere on his site as a heading.
That is a page to write, or a heading to change. You would never have found it by guessing. Ranking work you invent yourself is a hunch, ranking work driven by real queries is evidence.
Google Search Console for small business is really an indexing check
The second report worth your ten minutes is Pages, under Indexing. It splits the site into pages Google has indexed and pages it has not, with a reason attached to each.
Sites break quietly. A page gets set to noindex during a redesign and nobody notices. A duplicate URL swallows the original. A post from March sits in “Discovered, currently not indexed” for four months because nothing on the site links to it.
None of that shows on the front end. The site looks fine. It simply is not in the results, and no amount of new content fixes a page Google has decided to skip.
What Google thinks each page is for
The third check is the cheapest. Look at which of your pages Google chose to show for your main service terms.
If someone searches “dentist Thirsk” and Google keeps returning your homepage rather than the page you built for exactly that, it has not understood which page owns the topic. That is usually an internal linking problem or a title problem, and both are an afternoon’s work.
Ten minutes a month beats a dashboard nobody opens
None of this needs a subscription, and none of it needs a monthly report from an agency. It needs one tab, opened on the first Monday of the month.
The uncomfortable part is that Search Console rewards patience. Query data lags, indexing decisions take weeks, and the fix you make today shows up in the numbers long after you have forgotten making it. Which is the same reason SEO takes longer to show results than anyone would like.
So set the reminder. Check the queries, check the indexing, check which page Google picked. Not clever, just done.
